LANDWORKS SARDINIA 2014 – Intimate defence – Landscape workshop
Location: Villa Webber, La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy
Stakeholders: LANDWORKS, comune del La Maddalena, Villa Webber
Site: garden and Villa’s interiors
“Any space is a Sound Space, any sound diffusion generates an experience, any experience happens in a Sound Space, be it comfortable or not”. By re-design the material experience of Architecture and Landscape through a dedicated “sound space design” it make more unique, open and dynamic the experience of a material space, indoor or outdoor, using a specifically developed technology design. Any records, generated music or soundscapes can start re-designing the experience of “a specific space,” occurring and existing right now, taking advantage of the same architectural and experiential dimensions implied by the context: proximity, distance, freedom in movement, slowness, speediness, intensity, attention, reflection, obstacles, sound proofing, focus points, exposure. Sound Space takes from Music practices that a music flow is a communal flow, able to synchronize minds and habits, full of references and hidden memories, always consolidating a community or creating a new one.
In “Landworks Sardinia 2014” workshop the Soundscape research was based on specifics landscape characters and living memories of the Maddalena Island especially related to the site of Villa Webber and his history. Villa Webber was an old agricultural mansion situated in the middle of a Mediterranean landscape, really important for the survival of the island. The aim of the workshop was to revitalize this abandoned space through artistic interventions in order to easy interpretate its space and its histories. The Soundscape research group collected sounds of natural elements around the propriety, vocal memories of the islanders, storytelling and traditional musics in order to re-interpret all these materials and perform it. The final outputs, of this almost anthropological on-field research, were an on day happening between the inside and the outside of the Villa and the re-invention of an old kitchen-garden in a permanent Soundscape scenery.
SOUND SPACE DRAMATURGY IN TWO ACTS
Act 1: Villa Webber
The spatial restitution: a cleaning action as a time lapse video score contains and direct the sound piece. Daily life memories, sound traces, noises, transfigured by the physical acoustics of the villa are mixed and articulated in real time by six behavioral composers and several body performers.
Act 2: Hortus Conclusus (Closed Garden)
A basic accessibility of the former Hortus Conclusus allows visitors to visually and acoustically experience the current wildness of this physical and mental “closed/protected garden”. The dynamic polyphony of working forces has been for years the only human presence in Webbers’ loneliness. Performers represent at once the infinite tension and attraction between the natural strenght and the human intention to survive and transcend.
